Sustainability & Environmental Stewardship
Eagan’s commitment to sustainability is deep, genuine, and abiding. The Climate Action Plan adopted in 2025 is built on fifteen years of groundwork laid — decision by decision, investment by investment, council member by council member. The common thread woven into each green step is Mayor Maguire.
Between 2009 and 2010, Mayor Maguire helped lay the foundation for Eagan’s environmental commitment today. At that time, Mayor Maguire:
- Signed the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement;
- Encouraged Eagan to be among Minnesota’s first cities to join the GreenSteps Cities program; and
- Established along with the City Council, the Energy & Environment Advisory Commission, which later evolved into the Sustainable Eagan Advisory Commission.

In 2011, the new Fire Station 2 on Yankee Doodle Road became the first fire station in the nation to earn Green Globe certification. It was a concrete signal, in recycled materials and reused wood, that Eagan is a good steward of the land.
In recent years, Mayor Maguire and the City Council have named sustainability one of Eagan’s top two city priorities (Race Equity being the other), approved hiring a full-time Sustainability Coordinator position, implemented a franchise fee to fund our city’s sustainability initiatives, and adopted a bold Climate Action Plan — charting a course toward a net-zero Eagan within 25 years.
