Prudent Fiscal Management

“For years now, Eagan has been in the top one percent of cities nationwide with its Triple-A bond ratings. This comprehensive independent analysis is further confirmation of the fiscal prudence and responsibility shown by the City Council and our staff. Local residents and businesses can trust that Eagan’s finances — and their tax dollars — are being well managed.

-Mayor Mike Maguire

The first responsibility of local government is to spend taxpayers’ money wisely. The numbers show that Mayor Maguire and Eagan take fiscal responsibility seriously.

Eagan is one of the most efficient local governments in Minnesota, allowing us to deliver high-quality services at an affordable price with genuine value to the people who pay for them.

In 2016, Eagan earned its Aaa Triple-A bond rating from Moody’s Investors Service — the highest rating available — and has maintained it ever since. The rating reflects Eagan’s solid local economy, strong financial reserves, and disciplined fiscal stewardship. In practical terms, it means lower borrowing costs for taxpayers when the city bonds for capital projects, road improvements, and infrastructure and the ability to create more good jobs for the men and women who build and maintain them.

The Minnesota Center for Fiscal Excellence went further. After analyzing the 30 largest cities in the state across debt ratios, risk factors, and pension liabilities, they named Eagan “Minnesota’s fiscally healthiest city.”

For more than 30 consecutive years, Eagan has received the Government Finance Officers Association Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting — a national recognition of Eagan’s commitment to financial transparency and accountability. Open books. Honest accounting. No surprises.
